I turned 31 two weeks ago. I have to admit it was a relatively anticlimactic birthday after the big 3-0 ...you know, when society encourages us to have some form of a mid-life crisis. It's kind of weird when you think about it, that birthdays from here on out aren't necessarily considered "big" unless they signify a brand new decade. We have so many we look forward to as children: 1-9 (because birthdays are the best day ever!), 10 (double digits!), 13 (teen!) 16 (where's my car?), 18 (vote!), and of course, 21. Pass the Jack.

I spent two Mondays ago blissfully checked out from work, shopping with a girlfriend at the nicest mall out on Long Island. I couldn't remember the last time I walked around a shopping mall (#citygirl), and it ended up being such a perfect way to spend the day.

A funny thing happened before and after my time at the mall that I won't soon forget. On my way to meet my friend at her apartment I found $6 on the ground outside the subway stairs. I couldn't believe it! I looked around and no one was nearby that could have recently dropped it so I scooped it up and stuffed it into my coat pocket, silently thanking the city for its generous birthday gift.

Later that night, I ended up taking a brief cab ride to meet up with Patrick and realized I left my wallet at home - ugh! Just as I was explaining myself to the driver, I remembered... I reached into my pocket and pulled out the $6, the exact amount I needed for the ride + tip.

Serendipitous? Indeed.

I have no idea what kind of sign that is for the year ahead, but I'm feeling particularly grateful and hopeful, and ready for whatever the next year may bring!
